Qué es un Hostel? / What´s a hostel?

Otra modalidad de alojamiento dentro de los cuales podríamos decir es más accesible o económico, son los hostels.

Another modality of lodging within which we could say it´s more accessible or economic are the hostels.

Todo comenzó a principios del siglo XX cuando un maestro alemán (Richard Schirrmann) se le ocurrió buscar más comodidades para cuando salía de excursión con sus alumnos por el campo. Los viajes de Schirrmann ganaron tanta fama que en 1909 el maestro se vió alentado a abrir el primer hostel en un castillo reconstruido en Altena, Alemania. Diez años más tarde, fundó la Asociación Alemana de Albergues para Jóvenes. y vió como el movimiento alberguista se expandió con rapidez, primero en Europa, y en el resto del mundo entre los años 30 y 50.

It all started at the beginning of the 20th century when a German teacher (Richard Schirrmann) came up to find more comfort when he went on a field trip with his students. Schirrmann’s travels gained such fame that in 1909 the master was encouraged to open the first hostel in a reconstructed castle in Altena, Germany. Ten years later, he founded the German Association of Youth Hostels. and saw how the hostage movement expanded rapidly, first in Europe, and in the rest of the world between the 30s and 50s.

Las cinco bases que asegura un hostel son: bienvenida, limpieza, seguridad, privacidad y comodidad. Hoy todos los hostels de las organizaciones que componen la Federación Internacional de Albergues para Jóvenes (IYHF) trabajan bajo la marca Hostelling International y cada uno de ellos debe cumplir con un sistema de normas mínimas garantizadas.

The five bases that ensure a hostel are: welcome, cleanliness, security, privacy and comfort. Today all the hostels of the organizations that make up the International Federation of Youth Hostels (IYHF) work under the Hostelling International brand and each of them must comply with a system of guaranteed minimum standards.

Claro, de acuerdo a la antigüedad del edificio, la localización, los servicios de la zona y demás, cada una de estas “bases” se cumplen en mayor o menor medida. Me ha tocado “vivir la experiencia hostel” en lugares donde la “privacidad” se define como habitaciones de 8 pares de literas, y en otros donde no había grandes diferencias con un hotel (de similar categoría).

Of course, according to the age of the building, the location, the services of the area and so on, each of these “bases” are met to a greater or lesser extent. I have been living the hostel experience in places where “privacy” is defined as rooms of 8 pairs of bunk beds, and in others where there were no major differences with a similar hotel.

Hay un “espíritu comunitario” que se comparte, así como la premisa de las tarifas accesibles, pero no todos los hostels son iguales. Los hay pequeños y muy grandes; rurales y urbanos; sencillos y con gran infraestructura (piscinas, wi fi, excursiones, etc.). Más de uno está ubicado o en edificios antiguos o en ubicaciones excepcionales (como los de Nueva York). Sin embargo, los hostels no están categorizados por estrellas, como los hoteles tradicionales.

There is a shared “community spirit” as well as the premise of affordable rates, but not all hostels are the same. There are small and very large ones; rural and urban; simple and with great infrastructure (swimming pools, wi fi, excursions, etc.). More than one is located either in old buildings or in exceptional locations (such as those in New York). However, hostels are not classified by stars, like traditional hotels.

Las habitaciones suelen ser compartidas y separadas por sexo (entre 4 a 8 camas por cuarto) al igual que los baños comunitarios. Sin embargo, ya hay muchos que cuentan con habitaciones dobles o singles pagando una mínima diferencia. Además disponen de armarios o lockers donde los huéspedes pueden guardar sus pertenencias.

The rooms are usually shared and separated by sex (between 4 to 8 beds per room) as well as the community bathrooms. However, there are already many that have double or single rooms paying a minimal difference. They also have cabinets or cupboards where guests can store their belongings.

Numerosos albergues disponen de “habitaciones familiares”, dotadas a menudo de baño privado por lo que se convierten en una alternativa muy válida y económica, para cuando viajamos con nuestros niños.

Numerous hostels have “family rooms”, often endowed with private bathrooms, so they become a very valid and economical alternative, for when we travel with our children.

La cafetería suele ser el lugar de encuentro de toda la “fauna viajera”. Algunoshostels pueden incluir el desayuno, aunque lo habitual es que no lo hagan y que dispongan de máquinas expendedoras. De todas formas, todo el mundo va con su bocadillo o se lo arma allí, y comparte pan, fiambre y anécdotas.

The cafeteria is usually the meeting place of all the “traveling fauna”. Some hotels may include breakfast, although they usually do not and have vending machines. Anyway, everyone goes with their sandwich or puts it there, and shares bread, ham and anecdotes.

Si bien las tarifas son, como dijimos, muy apetecibles, el rango es amplio y varía de los servicios ofrecidos, la época del año y la ubicación. No cobra lo mismo un hostel en el centro de Londres que uno en un pueblito de Chile. Sin embargo siempre resultan más económicos que otro tipo de hospedaje, ya que la base de las tarifas es el precio de una cama y no de una habitación. Pongamos, por ejemplo, entre 10 y 25 dólares diarios.

While rates are, as we said, very appetizing, the range is wide and varies from services offered, time of year and location. It does not charge the same a hostel in the center of London that one in a small town of Chile. However, they are always cheaper than other types of accommodation, since the base of the rates is the price of a bed and not a room. Take, for example, between 5 and 17 euros per day.

Si piensan viajar con un grupo de amigos, consulten porque hay tarifas especiales y la posibilidad de “bloquear” todo un cuarto comunitario para ustedes.

If you plan to travel with a group of friends, ask about special rates and the possibility of “blocking” a whole community room for you.

Como dijimos hace unos días no importa la edad para viajar “joven”. Y ésto se hace realidad en cualquier hostel donde jóvenes mochileros se suman a parejas o solitarios de mediana edad y hasta viajeros más adultos aún. En Suecia, la edad promedio de los clientes es de 55 años. En un hostel uno recibe un servicio básico pero recomendable y, además, se vive un ambiente jovial, alegre y “viajero”.

As we said a few days ago, it does not matter the age to travel “young”. And this is true in any hostel where young backpackers join couples or middle-aged loners and even more adult travelers. In Sweden, the average age of clients is 55 years. In a hostel one receives a basic but recommended service and, in addition, a lively, cheerful and “traveler” atmosphere is lived.
